Project: ICD-V6 ClaML XML to MySQL Import
Client: Nick
Year: May 2020
Service: XML Parsing, PHP Data Processing, MySQL Database Design
Delivery: Prioritized, with the initial database structure shared for review
Project Overview
The client needed to import a medical classification dataset supplied in ClaML (Classification Markup Language) XML format into a MySQL database.
Rather than importing a plaintext version of the dataset, the client specifically required processing the structured ClaML XML file. The database schema also needed to be designed from the source data because the client did not have an existing MySQL table structure for this import.
The resulting database was intended for review and use by the client’s backend development team.
The Challenge
The project involved several practical data-processing requirements:
- Parse structured XML: Process the supplied ClaML XML rather than a plaintext representation.
- Design the database schema: Develop a MySQL structure based on the source data because no existing schema was provided.
- Preserve data accuracy: Cross-check the processed data before delivering the database.
- Meet a tight deadline: The client initially requested completion within one day.
- Prepare for backend integration: Provide a database backup that the client’s backend developers could review.
My Approach
1. Requirements clarification
I confirmed two essential details with the client before proceeding:
- Whether an existing MySQL schema was available or needed to be designed.
- Whether the import covered a single file or multiple files with the same structure.
The client confirmed that I should create the database structure based on the XML data and that only one file needed to be imported.
2. XML parsing and database design
I reviewed the supplied ClaML package and worked on converting its structured data into a MySQL database.
The database structure was designed around the source data rather than relying on a predefined schema. This established a database backup that could be inspected before the complete deliverable was finalized.
3. Validation and review
I shared an initial MySQL backup containing a limited number of records so the client could review the proposed database structure.
I then continued cross-checking the data and clarified a version-label question. The “v6” suffix in the ZIP filename was an internal file-version label added during processing, not a claim that the dataset represented an older ICD-6 edition.
4. Delivery coordination
Because the client needed the work urgently, I prioritized the project and communicated progress throughout the process. I also provided the initial database structure for review while completing the remaining data checks.
Project Outcome
The client acknowledged the database backup, confirmed that the filename concern was resolved, and indicated that the file would be sent to the backend development team.
The client subsequently thanked me for my help with the project.
The engagement demonstrated the importance of clarifying the source format, designing a suitable database structure, checking imported data, and communicating clearly when working against a short deadline.
Technical Capabilities Demonstrated
- XML parsing and structured data extraction
- ClaML dataset processing
- MySQL schema design based on source data
- Data import and accuracy checks
- Database backup preparation
- Coordination with a client’s backend development team
Need to Convert XML Data into MySQL?
I help businesses and developers transform structured data into usable database formats, including custom XML parsing, PHP-based data processing, MySQL imports, and automated data integration.
Whether you have a one-time XML import or need a repeatable data-processing solution, I can review your source file, clarify the requirements, and propose a practical implementation plan.
